Greater Manchester Institute of Technology

Tameside College has been confirmed as a core further education partner in the Greater Manchester Institute of Technology (GMIoT), a collaborative partnership between higher and further education institutions and industry partners.

Institutes of Technology (IoTs) are the government’s flagship programme designed to provide higher-level technical education, with a focus on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) subjects. They offer students clear pathways to technical employment, with industry input ensuring that skills gaps are addressed.

The GMIoT will operate on a hub and spoke model, with the University of Salford as the lead partner. It will provide state-of-the-art training facilities to help address the skills gap in key sectors such as engineering, computing, and construction.

Greater Manchester Institute of Technology officially opens hub at University of Salford

The University of Salford has launched its new Greater Manchester Institute of Technology (GMIoT) building on its Peel Park campus. The new £14.3m centre will be home to the University’s higher-level technical skills courses, and underlines its commitment to maximising skills and employment opportunities for local people in Salford and Greater Manchester.  It will be a hub for all IoT partners, welcoming learners from Tameside College as an education partner, offering hands-on learning spaces, digital labs, VR hubs, workshops and studios

From 18th-22nd November the college hosted the UK finals of the WorldSkills competition, which sees students from across the country compete in a variety of specialties. The event was held across Greater Manchester further education colleges.

Ben and Lucy are on top of the world for skills competition finals - 8th May 2024
Ben Love and Lucy Yelland, who are employed by engineering company Siemens and study as apprentices with the college, have qualified for the competition after taking part in several heats. These include: the north west regional, national and European final, which took place in Gdansk, Poland.

A celebration to mark the opening of a new multi-million-pound technical institute took place at the GMIoT launch event on 17th May 2023. The event showcased the collaboration between education providers, employers, and industry professionals in Greater Manchester.
