College to career event gives students taste of higher education

Students take part in taster day to experience higher education at Tameside College.

Computing and e-sports students at college took part in a ‘from college to career’ event at the college’s Tameside One and Clarendon Sixth Form College campuses on Friday 7th March, to learn about the courses available to them post-further education.

Tameside College, in partnership with GMIoT (Greater Manchester Institute of Technology), offers a range of higher education qualifications across computing (cyber security), electronic engineering and mechanical engineering.

During the event, students took part in a variety of activities including; a cyber security taster session with computing teachers, a presentation on studying a HE course by assistant principal Jennie Arnold, a STEM activities workshop with Lego ‘spike’ kits and a speech by Lilly Parr, digital technology specialist at Tameside College.

‘IoTs’ are a national initiative, funded by government, to bring together colleges, universities and employers to offer high quality qualifications in specialist subject areas.

Helen Booth, higher education quality officer at Tameside College, said: “This event is a fantastic opportunity for students to explore the exciting pathways available to them in higher education offered by the college, in partnership with GMIoT. By taking part in hands on activities and engaging with industry experts, they gain a real insight into the skills and knowledge needed for a successful career in computing and engineering. I hope that this will encourage them to consider a HE qualification with the college in the future.”
