Tameside College hosts prestigious national skills competition for students.
From 18th-22nd November the college hosted the UK finals of the WorldSkills competition, which sees students from across the country compete in a variety of specialties. The event was held across Greater Manchester further education colleges.
WorldSkills UK is an annual competition, described as the ‘skills Olympics’, which sees thousands of students compete to find the best talent across the country and showcase the skills they have learnt during their studies. Students who succeed in the WorldSkills UK competition can progress onto the international event, which will be hosted in Shanghai in 2026.
The college’s state of the art advanced technologies centre and sports hall, which was turned into an ‘exhibition zone’, hosted the automation, mechatronics, CNC milling, renewables, and additive manufacturing competitions.
The college also hosted the cyber security, graphic design and digital media production competitions at its Tameside One campus.
A highlight of the event included visits by local schools Audenshaw School and Droylsden High School to see the competition first hand. A variety of professional development and engagement events were also hosted as part of the week of activities.
Carl Shaw, assistant principal at Tameside College, said: ““Hosting the UK finals of the WorldSkills competition has been an incredible experience for everyone at Tameside College. The event has not only showcased the amazing talent of students from across the country but also highlighted the importance of skills education in shaping the future workforce, something the college is keen to highlight. We are proud to have played a part in inspiring the next generation and celebrating the achievements of these outstanding competitors. Well done to all the competitors.”
The college has already seen success during WorldSkills UK in recent years, with several students in the hospitality, engineering and plumbing categories reaching regional heats and national finals.
